WWDC23 on June 5: From new MacBook to first Apple AR/VR headset, everything expected to launch

By Abhik Sengupta: Apple's upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2023) could be Apple's biggest developer conference in a long time. Usually, we get a look at Apple's next-gen operating system (OS) for iPhones, Macs, iPads, Watches, and TVs. Apple also showcases some hardware at its annual WWDC, but it very rarely removes wraps from its first-gen product. This year, Apple is expected to unveil a new M2-powered MacBook Air. The show highlight could be its long-rumoured mixed-reality headset -- the stepping stone for Apple Glasses -- Apple's iPhone killer.

It means Apple may not unveil a new iPhone at the WWDC on June 5. The other days of the event till June 9 will focus on developer-focused updates.

Mixing the developer-focused WWDC with some new hardware could also be good for Apple, as its competitor recently unveiled it's first foldable, dubbed Pixel Fold. In a few weeks, Samsung will also launch its next-gen folding phones. OnePlus is also expected to launch its first OnePlus Fold around the same time.

Apple refreshed its 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro laptops with M1 SoC in 2020. Since then, new iterations have been added to bigger MacBook Pros and even iPad Pros. The latest MacBook Air includes M2-series SoC, but the screen size remains the same.

At WWDC, Apple is expected to launch a 15-inch MacBook Air with an M2 chipset. Feature-wise, it is expected to be the same as the 13-inch MacBook Air.

That means the MacBook Air 15 may feature a metal chassis and a non-touch LED display. Despite an LED display panel, the laptop may offer a native resolution of 2560x1664 pixels and 500nits brightness. Apple may also add an upgraded 1080p FaceTime camera and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity support.

Due to a laptop's large design, Apple could add a bigger battery with faster charging support. Since the new model will reportedly include a 15-inch screen, the price could go up drastically. Currently, the MacBook Air 13 with M2 SoC and 256GB SSD costs Rs 1,19,900. The top variant with 512GB SSD costs Rs 1,49,900.

Apple is also rumoured to launch an entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, a refreshed 24-inch iMac, the first Mac Pro with in-house chips, and an updated high-end MacBook Pro. Some of these PCs could be unveiled at WWDC, while the rest could be unveiled around December.

WWDC 2023 may mark the debut of Apple's long-awaited Reality Pro headset - designed to provide both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences.

Apple has been working to improve the AR experience on the latest iPad Pro and iPhone Pro models. The latest mixed-reality headset could improve the experience significantly.

However, the biggest challenge still remains is the size. Rumours suggest that Apple Reality Pro could look like ski goggles with some physical buttons to adjust the viewing and hearing experience. The aim is to offer the mixed-reality headset as a standalone device, meaning users won't have to place an iPhone inside the headset or connect to a console like traditional VR headsets. It will reportedly run on a custom OS called XrOS. Apple may also announce some dedicated apps for the device.

Apple always proudly boasts its product design and sustainable materials used for its products. The mixed-reality headset is also touted for using the most premium and lightest material available. Therefore, the price is expected to be around a whopping $3,000, that is, Rs 2.48 lakhs. This is why many reports suggest Apple employees are unhappy with the launch, given the price and the macroeconomic situation.

Apple WWDC 2023 schedule, keynote time announced

Back in March, Apple announced that its WWDC 2023 conference will begin June 5th and go on till June 9th. Now, it has confirmed that the Keynote will happen at 10 AM PDT (10:30 PM IST) on June 5th. There is a special in person experience at Apple Park on opening day.

Apple Design Awards will happen later in the day to recognize and celebrate the art, craft, creativity, and technical expertise of Apple’s developer community.

Apple has also announced winners of Apple Design Awards to honor excellence in innovation, ingenuity, and technical achievement in app and game design. The winners will be revealed during WWDC23.
